Vapor intrusion has become an emerging focus of federal, state, and local environmental agencies. Regulatory guidelines for the investigation, evaluation, and mitigation of vapor intrusion are in a constant state of flux and are highly dependent upon individual states and local regulatory authorities. Vapor Intrusion Professional’s staff routinely guides our clients through the technical, regulatory, legal, and risk communication challenges presented by vapor intrusion issues. Services provided by Vapor Intrusion Professionals include, but are not limited to those listed below.

Quick Links

BarrelsPhase I Site Investigation – Often a potential vapor intrusion condition is discovered during the Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Phase 1 ESA) process. The vapor intrusion provision of the current Phase I ESA guidelines established methodologies for screening properties to assess the potential for vapor intrusion issues.

PlumeSite Screening and Modeling – If a potential vapor intrusion concern is recognized, our professionals can prepare and implement an appropriate sampling an analyses plan. The sampling and analyses typically includes conduct soil gas and sub–slab vapor analysis, vapor transport modeling and interpretation, and providing expert analyses to determine if a vapor intrusion condition exists.

CanistersIndoor and Ambient Air Testing – When vapor transport modeling indicates a potential risk occupants of indoor structures, and/or when indoor testing is otherwise required, Vapor Intrusion Professionals will develop and implement a technically appropriate indoor air testing program that will be protective of human health and satisfy regulatory authorities. Indoor air testing requires a high degree of experience and knowledge due to the potential presence of household chemicals, building materials, and equipment often stored indoors that could create “false positive” indications of vapor intrusion. Indoor air testing often includes testing of ambient air conditions in order to determine background conditions.

PenRisk Assessment – Vapor Intrusion Professionals has extensive experience conducting risk assessments, modeling vapor transport, and negotiating appropriate action levels with regulatory authorities. Our experience ranges from use of standard screening models such as the Johnson and Ettinger (J&E) model to more sophisticated human models tailored to the specific contaminants of concern. Our engineers and scientists work directly with our sampling team to assure that all testing meets or exceed appropriate standards and will stand the test of regulatory scrutiny. VI–Professionals experts have experience with protocols and guidelines established by the U.S. EPA as well as many state and locals agencies.

BlowerVapor Mitigation – VI–Professionals staff have over 25 years experience with the remediation of subsurface vapors. This experience includes inexpensive sub–slab depressurization systems to large scale vapor extraction remediation. Our professionals are experts in vapor mitigation techniques including: passive venting; vapor extraction; sub–slab depressurization; sub–slab pressurization; positive building pressurization; and indoor air treatment.

Gas from GrassPublic Awareness – Our staff has extensive experience in high profile cases that involve community awareness, public meetings, and notification to residents. We use these opportunities to educate the public as to the real hazards versus the heightened fear that often accompanies the initial reaction to vapor intrusion concerns.

Expert Testimony – VI–Professionals engineers and scientists have experience providing expert opinions and testimony in cases in both state and federal courts related to contaminant migration. On complex cases we utilize GIS graphics to illustrate the often complex subsurface conditions in a credible and compelling manner. Our database team is often utilized to compile significant quantities of technical information in a manner that allows systematic interpretation and analyses of the data by our testifying experts.
